Exhibition “Breaking the veils”: women artists from the islamic worldThis event is promoted by the Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo – Maison de la Méditerranée, the Royal Society of Fine Arts of Amman, F.A.M. (Femme-Art-Méditerranée).
The Exhibition has already been inaugurated in Luxembourg (25 November – 31 December 2004).
The exhibition brings together around 70 paintings by 51 women artists living in 21 different Islamic countries, going from Indonesia to Yemen. They are all women, all Arabs but of distinct faith and generations. This is also the message they want to transmit through their artworks: to understand that the Arab world does not simply mean Islam and that the Muslim woman is always veiled. To spread this message they make use of the universal language, art. With oil paintings and aquarelles, but also engravings, collages and seriographies transforming themselves into bodies, faces and shadows, these women tell about their world, their traditions, their political contestation and of course the condition of women.
The message of art being a vehicle of dialogue and a way of overcoming barriers has also been underlined in an introduction by H.H. Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, H.H. Princess Wijdan Ali and Michele Capasso and Caterina Arcidiacono of the FLM.
